What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of alternative medicine that uses a patient focused, physical approach to examine, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of health problems and conditions. Osteopaths use a combination of movement, stretching, targeted deep tissue massage and manipulation of a person’s muscles and joints to improve function, relieve pain and most importantly support the bodies ability to heal itself. Our aim is to help promote physical and psychosocial well being
O
steopathy can be used safely to compliment other medical interventions including surgery and medication, we work alongside other medical practitioners including GPs, Physiotherapists, Midwives, Nutritionists and alternative and complimentary medicines.

Treatments

We will work with you to decide the best treatment approach for your case.
There are many modalities of treatment that we can choose from in order to tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs. Some of these modalities are outlined below
  • Articulation: rhythmical movements to take your joints through their range of movement and work on any restrictions found.
  • Soft tissue work: used to release tension within the muscles and different fascias of your body
  • Manipulations:  here you will have your joint put in a certain position and a quick impulse is put through. During these techniques you may or may not feel a click or a pop.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy is often separated out as a different type of Osteopathy altogether. However it is just one of the many modalities of treatment that an osteopath can choose from.

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle manipulative technique that works mainly, but is not limited to, the bones of the skull. Using gentle palpation we feel for the subtle movements of the body known as the involuntary motion.

This form of treatment may be different from what you have experienced from osteopathic treatments in the past. It is very gentle and seemingly passive, with little apparent movement taking place. This is usually an effective treatment for people who are unable to relax; migraine sufferers and those with cervicogenic headaches. It also provides a gentle treatment modality that is suitable for infants and young children.

Systemic Screening

Before we get started with treatment we will also screen your general health organ by organ to make sure you are not experiencing any symptoms that could put you at risk. We will also take your blood pressure for you.

Conditions that may benefit from Osteopathy

It is a common conception that osteopathy is a therapy used only to treat back problems, however this is not the case. Osteopathy has been shown to provide effective treatment and management of conditions such as:
  • Generalised aches and pains
  • Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis as an adjunct to core OA treatments and exercise
  • Arthritic pain
  • General, acute & chronic backache, back pain (not arising from injury or accident)
  • Uncomplicated mechanical neck pain (as opposed to neck pain following injury i.e. whiplash)
  • Headache arising from the neck (cervicogenic) / migraine prevention
  • Frozen shoulder/ shoulder and elbow pain/ tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, but not isolated occurrences
  • Circulatory problems, cramp
  • Digestion problems
  • Joint pains
  • Lumbago
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle spasms
  • Neuralgia
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Inability to relax
  • Rheumatic pain
  • Minor sports injuries and tensions
